Holtek First Session MCU Innovation Competition Report

Holtek Semiconductor on the 20th November held its first MCU Innovation Competition. With Holtek as the major sponsor the activity was also assisted by the Department of Electronics at the Lunghwa University of Science and Technology. Participating in this event were over 100 Technical Colleges, Technical schools and Senior colleges from all over Taiwan.

Holtek Semiconductor as a global MCU design company, in focusing its development efforts in the area of microcontroller design, and in achieving extensive progress in the areas of noise immunity and low power has given it a technical leadership status while at the same time being the first major company in Taiwan to provide MCUs of industrial grade.

The Holtek MCU product range is comprehensive in nature, with the temperature capabilities of its devices meeting the requirements of industrial specifications and some devices even meeting the requirements of automotive specifications. Recent years have witnessed a stream of successes and with profits hitting repeated new records the devices are sure to have their place in the global MCU market. The present innovation competition was based around one of Holtek's A/D type devices, namely the HT46R24 which contains 8K of internal Program Memory, 384 bytes of Data Memory, 40 I/O pins and an 8-channel 10-bit resolution A/D converter. Additional features in the device include a 4-channel, 8-bit PWM high frequency output, an I2C slave interface, a Programmable Frequency Divider, a Low Voltage Reset as well as a host of other useful features. This range of flexible features, make the device extremely suitable in application areas such as household metering, household appliances, industrial control etc.

The assistant partner in the competition is the Lunghwa University of Science and Technology, which was the first private Technology University in the north of Taiwan. With technical vocational training as an objective, and in response to the needs of society to technological developments, the University adopted a philosophy of practicality, excellence and innovation as the basis for its education. Its teaching style also coaches students in the area of professional ethics, how to practically conduct themselves, and to have excellence in their general outlook on life. The school has continued to maintain high standards of educational quality, and is serious in its intention to cultivate talent among those students with a bias in both the theory and practice of technology. The activity was financially supported by the Department of Education and its importance was evident from the attendance at the event by the Director and Assistant Director of Education.

Holtek and the Lunghwa University of Science and Technology, hope that cooperative innovation competitions such as this one, will help to promote the use of Holtek MCU devices. By introducing these high functioning MCU devices into the educational system, both sides look forward to the competition participants learning from each other's creativity. This activity will therefore serve as a means to give something in return to the University and also locate outstanding personnel and products. In support of this competitive activity, Holtek is supplying in excess of 1,000,000 New Taiwan Dollars worth of development systems and funds to encourage the maximum participation of schools and students. From these funds a special prize in excess of 150,000 New Taiwan Dollars will be given to the best group project. It is Holtek's desire that this activity will stimulate the student's creativity, giving rise to the application of MCU devices in a wide range of areas as well as enhancing industry/academic interaction and cooperation.
